Early childhood education and care

Here, you will find information on various topics related to early childhood education, including the latest news, available services, and the early childhood education plan. There are three daycare centers in Hämeenkyrö. Feel free to explore these pages to learn more about how we support the growth and development of young children in Hämeenkyrö.

Applying for an Early Childhood Education Place

Applications for early childhood education places are filled out electronically via the eVaka Hämeenkyrö online service. The same application form is used to apply for municipal early childhood education and to request a service voucher for private early childhood education. The application can also be used to request a transfer from one daycare to another, to apply for pre-primary education, and for supplementary early childhood education. If necessary, paper application forms are available at daycare centers.

Completed forms can be returned to the daycare center or sent to: Hämeenkyrön kunta, varhaiskasvatus, Kyrönsarventie 16, 39100 Hämeenkyrö.

Applications for an early childhood education place must be submitted four months before the need for care begins. If the need for early childhood education is due to employment or studies and the timing is not foreseeable, the application must be submitted at least two weeks before the start of care. The Kela home care allowance ends, and the early childhood education client fee starts from the date agreed upon by the family when accepting the care place.

We actively use digital devices to explore, experiment, and marvel at the diversity of nature.

We operate as a Green Flag daycare, focusing on sustainable development (Read more about Green Flag here).

Pre-primary education

Children enrolled in pre-primary education must attend regularly on pre-primary education days. Education and meals are provided free of charge. Pre-primary students are entitled to school transportation if the distance between home and school is more than three kilometers.

Pre-primary education generally follows the same working and holiday schedules as schools.

If a child needs early childhood education in addition to pre-primary education, it will be arranged in the same group as the pre-primary education. A place for early childhood education is applied for through an electronic early childhood education application. For children in private daycare who are in pre-primary education, a service voucher from the municipality for early childhood education is applied for using an electronic form.

Enrollment for pre-primary education and, if necessary, supplementary early childhood education for the 2024-2025 school year is done through the eVaka Hämeenkyrö online service at evaka.hameenkyro.fi. Enrollment is for children born in 2018. The scope of pre-primary education is at least 700 hours per year (20 hours per week).

Basic education

Hämeenkyrö offers comprehensive basic education in elementary and secondary schools. There are four elementary schools and two secondary schools in Hämeenkyrö. Check out the options on this page.

Heinijärvi Elementary school

Heinijärvi School serves students from grades 1 to 6, with approximately 100 students enrolled. The school is located in the village of Heinijärvi, about 7 km from the central area of Hämeenkyrö. Students come from a wide area, including the villages of Heinijärvi, Laitila, Vanaja, Kierikkala, Herttuala, and Kalkunmäki, as well as from Kyröspohja, Haukijärvi, and Jumesniemi.

Notably, the key locations associated with Nobel laureate F.E. Sillanpää—Myllykolu, Töllinmäki, and Saavutus—are situated nearby. Consequently, literature and writing are naturally emphasized in the school's activities.

The school's green campus and surrounding environment, with forests, fields, and lakes, support environmental education and the sustainable development program implemented at the school. The campus includes facilities such as a sports field/ice rink, floorball rink, sledding hill, climbing frames, and nearby forest trails, offering excellent opportunities for recess activities and physical education.

In the school yard, there is an early childhood education unit completed in 2013, which houses two daycare groups and a pre-primary education group.

Mahnala Environmental School

Mahnala Environmental School (MYK) promotes a sustainable lifestyle and educates approximately 200 students from grades 1 to 6. MYK is located in the historic Mahnala village in Hämeenkyrö, an area that has existed since the Iron Age. The school is situated in a nationally significant cultural landscape, 11 km from Hämeenkyrö town center and 30 km from Tampere.

Since the early 1990s, MYK has implemented and developed distinctive pedagogy as part of its operational culture and learning environments. The school embraces sustainable everyday practices and teaches sustainable development through environmental education methods, in close interaction with the local environment and various networks.

The school facilities include the Old School Building (1903, undergoing major renovation since 2021), a new building (2018), a school garden, and outdoor facilities such as a yard hut, field, swings, climbing frames, and a future small animal enclosure for animals like chickens. The school grounds lead directly to the local cultural environment and nature, with almost all nature and landscape types typical of Pirkanmaa within walking and biking distance.

Students work in the school garden, learn about rural entrepreneurs, collect natural products, compost and recycle, and participate in both the renovation of old structures and the construction of new ones. They learn from local heritage and develop future influence skills through the Green Flag council, which functions as the student body (Green Flag permanent/sustainable usage since 2003).

The school's operations aim to support the goals of basic education by avoiding the waste of natural resources, reducing environmental impact, and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. This helps students understand the interconnectedness of various issues. Environmental awareness guides actions, and students grow to take responsibility for their environment. This unique learning culture supports children's education and develops the pedagogical and social practices within their operational environments.

Mahnala Environmental School is part of the Finnish Nature and Environmental Schools Network (LYKE)*.
